FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening the core, improving posture, increasing flexibility, and enhancing overall body awareness. It’s done on a yoga-style mat using your body weight for resistance, sometimes with small props like balls, bands, or rings. Movements are slow, controlled, and focused on alignment and breath, making it a gentle yet powerful practice for building strength from the inside out.

Pilates works by activating deep stabilising muscles—especially in the core, back, hips, and pelvic floor—while promoting controlled movement and mindful breathing. Over time, it helps improve balance, coordination, mobility, and overall muscle tone. Because it targets functional movement patterns, it supports everyday activities and can help prevent injury and reduce pain or stiffness.

Not at all. Pilates is suitable for all fitness levels, including complete beginners. Each session can be modified to suit your current ability, and you’ll be guided through the movements with care and support. It’s a great starting point if you’re returning to movement after a break or looking for something gentle yet effective.

Yes, when taught by a qualified instructor, Pilates is very safe and is often recommended by physiotherapists and health professionals. It’s low-impact and designed to work with your body, not against it. If you have any specific injuries or conditions, these can usually be worked around with modifications to suit your needs.

Yes, definitely! Pilates is a fantastic option for healthy aging and is widely recommended for people in their 60s, 70s, and beyond. It helps improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture—all of which support mobility and confidence as we age. Sessions can be easily adapted to suit your comfort and ability level, making it a safe and supportive practice no matter your age or experience.

Yes—Pilates can be highly beneficial for people with osteoporosis, but it’s important to approach it with care. Certain Pilates exercises can help improve posture, build strength, enhance balance, and support bone health. However, some movements (like deep forward bends, twists, or high-impact exercises) should be avoided or modified to reduce the risk of fractures.

If you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, always let your instructor know so your sessions can be safely tailored to your needs. With proper guidance, Pilates can be a safe and empowering part of your wellness routine.
